Cecil Rochfort Doyly John(British 1906–1993)
Oil on canvas, titled 'Le Lavandou, Near Toulon, South Coast Of France', signed lower right 'Doyly John' and inscribed with the title on the back of the canvas.
Doyly John was a South African-born British painter best known for his brightly colored, stylized depictions of landscapes. He used a palette knife to create heavily textured paintings of scenes from all around the world including many views of the south of France, the Mediterranean and Venice.
In his early life he travelled the globe working in a variety of roles but returned to the UK at the outbreak of world war II. He was badly injured during this time, reputedly by an exploding bomb, and it was during a period of prolonged recuperation that he learned to paint.
D'oyly John lived in Cannes for several years before settling on the south coast of England.
His work are collected globally and are now in big demand.
